Aegir was the Norse god of the sea and husband of the sea goddess Ran. Aegir was feared and worshipped by sailors, he was said to appear on the ocean surface and take sailors and their cargo to his hull at the bottom of the sea. Sacrifices were made to appease him, mainly prisoners before a sail.
